The Day I Gave Birth

The day I gave birth was the day my life changed. Not only did my life change but it also changed my boyfriend’s and my family’s. I never thought this day would of came to reality, waiting for 9 months to be able to see my little munchkin felt like if it was going to be years. It was a great and unforgettable day for me. I can still remember everything I had to go through to give birth. One of the scariest things I had to do during the pregnancy was finding a way to tell my parents without them getting mad at me, due to the fact that I was 17 and underage when I got pregnant. When I was about to get out of school, I had texted my sister saying “Tell my mom that I’m pregnant” and she said “No, you need to tell her, it’s your problem” and then I replied “Fine I’ll tell her, but tell her to go to my room when I get home.” So there I was walking home from school shaking and trying to figure out how I was going to tell my mom how this happened. Therefore, I got home and went in my room and, right when I got in, my mom came in after me. Moreover, my mom told me to sit down and I started to tell her. “The reason why I told you to come in my room was because everything that people have been saying about me is all true.” She replied saying “What do you mean?” I said “well, I’m pregnant.” “Well, why couldn’t you tell me?” “I was afraid that you and my dad wouldn’t support me with my pregnancy.” Then she said “Well we need to talk to your dad.” So we did and when we did he also said he was going to support me and be there for me. As months passed by, day after day, I got bigger and more nervous every time. I thought that time was around the corner. The night before I gave birth, I had contractions but I didn’t think I would be in labor so soon. The reason why I thought I wasn’t in labor yet was because my water didn’t break, therefore, I waited all night with pain. I spent all night telling my boyfriend that I was ready to go into labor because I was having contractions and I couldn’t sleep but he was asleep and wouldn’t wake up. The only thing I remember him telling me was “leave me alone. Let me sleep.” Although I tried to go to sleep through-out the night, I couldn’t just for the fact that I had a lot of pain. I realized I had gone to sleep for a little while and it was Sunday morning, which means it was church day. So there I go and get ready and change to go to church. When we were in church, I was feeling dizzy every time I would stand up, so I just stayed sitting down throughout the church ceremony. After church was over, I was feeling really hungry so when we got home my mom was making me some French toast and, when I was in my room, I could smell the cinnamon. I went to the kitchen and was about to eat when I started getting contractions every 5 minutes. I couldn’t wait any longer or speak to tell my boyfriend and mom so I had to write it down on a piece of paper and I showed it to them and right when I showed them the piece of paper they started calling my dad because he had promised he would be there and if I needed a ride he would take me, but my dad wouldn’t answer his phone. I, as the pregnant one, couldn’t wait any longer so I asked my grandma and she said she still needed to get gas for her car so we were on our way to the hospital and she still stopped at the gas station. After she was done putting gas we left to the hospital. When we got to the hospital it was 12:45 PM. As I walked in the room, I noticed it was really bright and big. As they checked my weight they also checked how many centimeters wide I was. I got to lay on the bed and it was really comfortable and when they told me how wide I had dialated, I was really surprised because I was 8 centimeters wide. While I was lying down I was waiting for me to be 10 centimeters. While I was getting the contractions sooner, every 2-3 minutes, I was getting a lot of pain and they had asked me if I wanted the epidural and I had said no. It was 3 PM and my water hadn’t popped yet so the doctor came in and had popped it for me. After that was when all the pushing began. While I was pushing I remember telling my boyfriend, mom and mother in law “I can’t do it I’m falling asleep, I’m really sleepy.” My mom and boyfriend both said “don’t fall asleep; it’ll bring consequences into your labor.” So I didn’t fall asleep because my mom told the doctor I was falling asleep and they put a cold icy cloth on my forehead and kept talking to me to stay awake. As time passed by, it was time to give birth so there I was pushing until my little one came out. While I was giving birth, I can still remember when my mom got in trouble by the doctors because she couldn’t take pictures or video while I was giving birth until I finished. One thing I will never forget is the doctor telling my boyfriend to sit down because he thought he looked pale and, as soon as he sat down, our son popped out. The nurses even told my boyfriend he didn’t look pale at all. It was 4:25 PM when my little one was born and there I was crying for the excitement that I had done it all without any pain reliever medicine. It was a boy and he was named Christopher Giovanni Prado. He weighed 6.8 ounces and was 20 inches tall. We stayed in the hospital for three more days, so we left until the following Wednesday. The reason we stayed for longer was so I could recover from the birth and to make sure everything was good and healthy with Christopher. While we stayed, we got many people that would go to visit us. Those people included my uncles, cousins, parents, and my boyfriend’s family. While I and Chris stayed in the hospital for the three days, my boyfriend had to leave us for a while because he was going to Ventura College at the time and didn’t like missing his classes. The only day he missed was when the doctors told us we were going home that day. When we went home, my family was waiting for us and they were happy to see me and Christopher finally at home. As of today my son Christopher, is a year and 8 months; and his dad and I are still together. His dad and I will have 5 years together in February 5. He learned how to walk the day of his first birthday. Although my baby’s dad and I still don’t move in together, we’re always together spending quality time with our family.

  5. I agree, emotions are mixed. When my son was born I was so scared, I was in the room standing to the right of the doctor, I wanted to look and see the moment my son came to this world but it just scary. I ended up turning the other way.

  7. Ouch seriously i'm so scared of finding out to be pregnante and of giving birth. You are extremely strong...no epidural is such a brave thing. A lot of my friends that have baby's have gotten epidural. That's really good to know that you and your boyfriend are still together. Good luck for you and your little family (:
